Be a For Pete’s Sake Restaurant for a Day is a novel fundraising event in aid of the For Pete’s Sake Trust. The intention is that twenty restaurants and hotels throughout Galway city and county will give the value of dessert or a contribution towards the For Pete’s Sake Trust during the month of November.
For Pete’s Sake is a trust raising funds towards specialist cancer treatment for Pete, a 40 year old husband and father of 3 young children in Oranmore, who earlier this year was suddenly struck by an aggressive form of cancer. The cost of his treatment in the US is c. €150k.
The organisers of the event said, “The response by restaurants so far has been very positive. Some dates are still available in November. Participating restaurants have generously offered to donate the revenue from desserts sold as part of a lunch/dinner meal on their chosen date in November to the For Pete’s Sake fund. The target for this fundraiser from participating restaurants is €4000 towards the lifesaving cancer treatment.”
Restaurants already signed up in Galway city include Maxwells, Martine’s and Eat Gastropub in Massimo. In Kilcolgan, Moran’s Oyster Cottage is signed up. In Oranmore, restaurants include Brazco, Pearl na Mara and Keanes, and in Clarinbridge, Paddy Burkes.

Background
Following months of extensive chemotherapy it is now apparent that the only option remaining, to give Pete a real chance, is to travel to New York over the coming 6 to 9 months for life-saving treatment and cancer drugs that are not available in Ireland. This treatment is hugely expensive, estimated to be in the region of $175,000. The medical team at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York believe that with this treatment Pete will have a good chance of success.
