There is just one week left to lodge nominations for this year’s Cathaoirleach’s Awards—previously the County Mayors Awards—which will take place this November.

There are twelve categories in total covering a wide range of community and voluntary activity such as sport, promoting the heritage of our county, social inclusion activities and the environment.

Two new categories relating to the Irish language introduced last year will return. One recognises the work that groups are doing in the Gaeltacht to promote the language and the other relates to the non Gaeltacht area of the County.

Also making a return is the Community Enterprise Initiative Award. This recognises community groups who have developed initiatives in their area which have made a positive economic impact on the community.

Recognising Galway’s effort to become an Age Friendly County, the Age Friendly Award returns this year. This Award recognises the efforts that groups have made to support and integrate older persons in the Community.

The popular Arts & Culture Award is expected to be hotly contested this year with the buzz that has been created around Galway’s bid to become the European Capital of Culture in 2020. The only individual award is the Volunteer of the Year Award which recognises the outstanding contribution that an individual volunteers has made to their community in 2015.

The winners will be presented at an Awards Ceremony with a specially commissioned Cathaoirleach’s Community Award hand crafted by a local Galway craft producer and a prize to the value of €500.

Nomination forms can be downloaded from Galway.ie/cathaoirleachawards—and closing date is 4pm next Friday, October 30th.
