The death has occurred of May Giles of Kiltrogue, who was a teacher in the parish over a long period. Teaching started for the young Mary Moran in 1952 when she replaced Delia McDermott Kearney who had died that year. Mary taught in Lackagh for many years before her marriage to Peter Giles. Several years after their marriage Mary was back in Lackagh once again and later became principal of Cregmore National School.

Mary was a strict teacher and was very much part of the old brigade of teachers who taught the basics well but was slow to move to a more modern brand of education.

That did not hinder her in her values and with the support of younger teachers was always able to see her pupils perform well when it came to seeking entry to the next level on the education field.

Mary Giles was also a hardworking farmer and following the death of her husband also continued to farm the land, attend livestock marts or do whatever had to be done on the land.

Her remains were removed from the O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour to St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Road, Galway and following her funeral Mass burial took place in the New Cemetery, Bohermore.

Mary is survived by her sons Francis and Gabriel, daughter Ciara, grandchildren James Coyle, Peter and Finian Giles, sister, extended family and many friends.
