A Galway pair in search of their dream home feature on the first episode of a new RTÉ television series that follows the trials and tribulations of those trying to buy, rent or sell a home in the current property market.

First time buyers Suzanne Rushe and Maria Molloy are the focus of attention in the opening episode of Find Me A Home, a nationwide six-part observational documentary series that airs for the first time tonight (Thursday) at 8.30pm on RTÉ One.

And Galway’s leading property firm, O’Donnellan & Joyce, also feature prominently as the women attend one of their auctions in their quest to find the home that best suits their needs.

The cameras follow Suzanne and Maria as they attend open viewings and ultimately bid on a two bedroom mid-terraced house on Henry Street at O’Donnellan & Joyce’s auction on May 4 this year.

Across the series there are a wide variety of house hunters often in very tricky situations—first time buyers finding it difficult to get a mortgage and a deposit, downsizers, hoping to trade down to release cash, buyers and sellers at property auctions, home owners in negative equity and renters who feat they’ll never get their foot on the property ladder.

The series goes behind the scenes with estate agents across the country as they try to help stimulate the market after a turbulent decade—with mixed results.

O’Donnellan & Joyce, the largest auction house in Galway and outside of Dublin, will also feature in this regard.

All in all, the series is a highly-charged mix of emotions as couples and individuals struggle to make the most important decision of their lives.

Also featured in the first episode is a home owner trapped by negative equity, and visit to a unique converted farmhouse for sale in West Cork.

Across the series viewers will meet a wide variety of house hunters often in very tricky situations:

  • first time buyers finding it difficult to get a mortgage and a deposit
  • downsizers, hoping to trade down to release cash
  • buyers and sellers at property auctions
  • home owners in negative equity
  • renters who feat they’ll never get their foot on the property ladder

In some parts of the country, including Galway, a chronic lack of supply leads to frantic bidding wars, while in other areas agents go years without selling a single house.

The series was filmed in the Spring and Summer of 2016 in counties Dublin, Galway, Wicklow, Cavan, Leitrim, Limerick and Cork.
