Every Primary School in Galway to benefit from Minor Works Grant Scheme – Kyne

Grants represent a minimum of €1.845 million for Galway Primary Schools

Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Natural Resources and Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South, Seán Kyne has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton that all primary schools in Galway will receive funding under the Minor Works Grant Scheme in the coming weeks.

Commented Minister of State Kyne: “My colleague Minister Bruton has confirmed to me that all 235 primary schools will receive grants under the Minor Works Scheme in the coming weeks. The grants are worth a base €5,500 for each school with an additional €18.50 per pupil enrolled and a higher rate of €74 per pupil with special educational needs.

“Under the Scheme schools can put the funding to use for improvements to school buildings and grounds, the purchase of furniture, IT equipment and other equipment.

“From my experience Galway schools are top of the class in using funding under the Minor Grant Scheme to maintain and improve facilities for pupils across the county. I know this allocation will be warmly welcomed by the many teachers and principals who have contacted me on this Scheme in recent months.

“Based on the most recent statistics available (2014/15) from the Department on school enrolment numbers the Minor Works Grant Scheme will see at least €1.845 million invested in primary schools in Galway.

“Overall the Minor Grants Scheme represents as €28.5 million investment in our primary schools across the country and shows that Fine Gael in Government is committed to investing the benefits of our country’s economic recovery in vital services such as education.”

Notes:

Primary Pupils – Mainstream – 29,083 x €18.50 = €538,035
