Cregmore Primary School Basketball Blitz

On Tuesday, 15th May, the Cregmore Primary School Girls’ Basketball Blitz took place in Cregmore National School. The tournament is in its 10th year and has gone from strength to strength since it was first established in 2008.This is the only competitive blitz of its kind in the area and it gives primary school girls a great introduction to the game of basketball. From modest beginnings of six teams, a rented hall and a crowd of 80, it is now supported by Basketball Ireland and it is one of the biggest events of its kind in the area.

This year, eight schools participated in the blitz.  They included; Lackagh N.S., Brierhill N.S., Newtown N.S., Lisheenkyle N.S. Oranmore N.S., Cregmore N.S., Craughwell N.S.  and New Inn N.S. The eight schools competed in a number of games throughout the day for a ‘Cup’ and ‘Shield’.  Brierhill N.S. defeated Cregmore N.S. in a very competitive and close ‘Shield’ final with a score of 8-6.  From the start both sides were eager to give it their all, with an opportunity to take home the new ‘Shield’ at stake. The teams were very evenly matched with tough defence on both sides, keeping the score to a basket each at half time. A number of narrow misses for both teams at either end saw no further score achieved within normal time. The atmosphere was electric while extra time was played. In extra time Brierhill scored the winning basket to win the ‘Shield’ final.

The ‘Cup’ final did not disappoint, it was close and exciting and the crowd were on their feet until the final whistle was blown.  Lackagh came out victorious against Craughwell N.S. with a score of 6-0 taking the ‘Cup’ home for their school.

Mike Murray, Development Officer for Basketball Ireland was there to oversee and assist with the event.  He expressed his delight to see over one hundred and twenty girls from schools around the county getting to socialise together and display their talent’s in basketball.  He thanked competition coordinators, Mrs. Anna Marie Coyle and Mrs Stephanie Herwood for their vision and commitment in organising this event annually and said he hoped that players would consider joining their local clubs.

Nobody left empty handed and following the presentation of trophies and medals, all participating girls received a treat to send them home happy.

                      Exciting   Book Launch of

It’s Our Cookbook 2018- Recipes from Cregmore National School.

On Thursday the 17th of May, the school community of Scoil Pádraig Naofa welcomed Fr Des Walsh to launch their impressive school cookbook. Creating this cookbook provided these pupils with the exciting opportunity to collaborate with one another and to design a finished product that they are all extremely proud of. Every pupil and teacher in the school were encouraged to provide their own special recipes, a selection of which were chosen to be included in the publication.

Both the children and school staff thoroughly enjoyed the day the enthusiastic production team, Katriona,, Caroline and Shane attended their school. Great fun was had by all as they dressed up as budding chefs, posing with an array of marvellous props. They were overwhelmed with the incredible support they received from all their generous sponsors. This support reiterates the love that the school and surrounding community feel towards their little heart warrior- Jonah.

Jonah was born in July 2015 with a rare heart condition and since then he has defied all medical opinion as he continues to battle courageously each day.  During this fantastic event a cheque for €3,000 was presented to Edel, Jonah’s mother, proceeds of the sale of the cookbook to date.

During the cook book launch the sixth class children entertained all present with cookery demonstrations ranging from parma ham and melon starters, a gorgeous vegetarian pasta dish and a fabulous selection of tasty treats for dessert. Everybody enjoyed delicious samples of everything that was prepared on the day.

A special word of thanks was given to Carla (Ms Duggan) and Margaret without whom this project would not have been possible.

Gratitude was expressed to all who have purchased the cookbook to date, some copies are still available for sale from the school office 091 799037.
