The club ran a 12 hour basketball marathon on 21st November last. This year’s event proved to be a great success. We had great support from the children who had no trouble organising themselves into teams and making sure that the marathon kept going through the day. Also during the day a game was organised between Claregalway U19 and Moycullen U19. This proved to be quite competitive and Moycullen won only by the narrowest of margins with Claregalway putting up a great display of basketball. Our thanks to Moycullen club for going along with our rules for the marathon and also for their kind donation to the marathon fund. The club would also like to thank Jimmy Roche of ROCO and Daly Frozen Foods for their generous donations, it is greatly appreciated. Thank you to all parents for their co-operation with the marathon day and especially all those who sponsored the children.

Finally we would like to thank Ann Moran who provided sandwiches and cakes throughout the day to keep us all going. Would all those who have sponsorship cards please return them to their coaches at the next training session.

Our U11 girls team had a trip to Maree/Oranmore for their game of the season. They played two games and Claregalway succeeded in winning both games. Our U13 boys also played their first game of the season against Maree/Oranmore in the Claregalway Centre. Maree proved to be the better team on the team but the Claregalway lads showed great spirit.

Training will continue until the 18th December and will re-commence on Wednesday 5th January 2000.

I would like to take this opportunity to compliment Maura Harte for initially starting up the Basketball Club in Claregalway. It has gone from strength to strength and talking to Maura recently she told me that they have a coach for every age group, which is a great achievement. Congratulations to all the coaches and everybody involved in the Club. I know the children of Claregalway enjoy it and the regular turnout is an indication of this. —Josette
