The U21s delivered an encouraging start to the new football season by winning their first round (A) Championship match against Annaghdown, 0–13 to 1–8, at Cregg on Saturday last. Claregalway had it all to do following Annaghdown’s goal in the final quarter but they rose to the demands of the occasion in fine style with a string of points towards the end to clinch the result.

Lotto is now €12,100. This big jackpot stands waiting for someone to pick the matching four numbers. Lotto numbers last week: 4,7, 28, 31. Two match-threes, each received €100: Josephine Concannon, Muintreach and Deirdre and Cathal from Egan’s Bar. Sellers’ prize, Carnmore Mini-Stores.

This week we had two match-threes: Michael Hession, Summerfield and Roisín Duggan, Montiagh. The sellers’ prize went to Martin Joe Farragher. Next draw on Monday night in the Arches Hotel.

We sympathise with the Boyle family, Cregboy, on the death of Martin who passed away last week. A trustee of the Club, Martin was richly endowed with community values and traditional attributes. A staunch GAA enthusiast throughout his life, he was a member of the last GAA hurling team to win a county title, the Junior Championship in 1952. During the Footbal Club’s formative years in the 1970s Martin was pivotal to its development. The Committee of the day had been searching around for a permanent home and the search ended in 1978 with the purchase of seven-and-a-half acres of land from Martin. Located at Lakeview, the land was developed for the football pitches and the construction of the Leisure Centre that have provided the highly valued amenities for the Claregalway community ever since. May he rest in peace.
