Parents in Claregalway recently received several welcome news updates regarding the establishment of the new second-level school in Claregalway in 2013. Parents’ Committee members Paddy Tobin and Michael Hannon have had contact and discussions in recent months with TDs, Councillors, Council Officials, and Education Officials. The following updates have been received.

  • Patronage
Co. Galway VEC is the only applicant for patronage for the Claregalway School. This information is available on the Dept. of Education website. Minister of State Ciarán Cannon confirmed that, following the evaluation process, the Dept. expects to announce the appointment of all new school patrons nationally in late May.
  • Opening Date
Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD has officially confirmed in writing to Derek Nolan TD, and has answered a Dáil question from Brian Walsh TD, that the school will open in September 2013, in interim accommodation. Several options are available in Claregalway for locating such interim accommodation.
  • Site and New Buildings
Galway County Council is working with the Dept. to identify and acquire a suitable site in accordance with the schedule indicated in the Ministers March announcement of new school construction projects. This schedule identifies that the permanent new school will be built in Claregalway in 2014/15.

As soon as the new patron is appointed, the Parents’ Committee will invite the patron to meet the parents in Claregalway to discuss the enrolment process for the new school. Based on numbers signed up during the recent patronage application process, the new school is expected to open with up to 150 children enrolling in first year in September 2013.
