This weekend, 12th of May, Oranmore Civil Defence volunteers will run the 10km from Oranmore Garda Station to Galway City Fire Station carrying a field stretcher in a bid to raise crucial funds for CRY, an Irish charity that promotes research and awareness of cardiac risk in the young.

CRY in Ireland was founded over ten years ago to help those who have experienced the effects of sudden cardiac death within their families. They provide counselling and support to those affected. Sudden Cardiac Death is the term used to describe any dramatic or spontaneous death that is thought to be caused by a sudden change in the heart’s rhythm.

The volunteers will leave Oranmore Garda Station at 1pm and ask the public to support them if they see them on the day. They will also be hosting a table quiz on Friday the 10th of May in Bodkins at 8pm. It costs €20 for a team of 4. Anybody who wishes to enter can email [email protected].

Oranmore Civil Defence volunteers are all registered with the pre-hospital emergency care council, and are fully trained to deal with sudden cardiac arrest. Civil Defence Commander Louie Casserly says: “all of our Civil Defence ambulances carry defibrillators, basic life support equipment and medication, which volunteers are fully trained to use in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Oranmore Civil Defence serves the people of Oranmore and surrounding areas by providing a full ambulance service to community events and also in response to emergencies, which would otherwise stretch the front-line emergency service’s resources.

All members of Oranmore Civil Defence are volunteers who commit a minimum of two hours per week to train in life-saving skills such as: pre-hospital emergency care, rescue, search operations, welfare, powerboat operations and communications.
