Galway will submit its bid to win the European Capital of Culture 2020 by the end of this week.

The first bid book will be submitted to the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht by 17th of October. The bid book contains many of the ideas aired and submitted over recent months at a series of Galway 2020 Speak Outs and meetings.

It will then be considered by a European adjudication panel of twelve people. Between 11th and 13th of November, the adjudication panel will consider the Galway bid in the format involving a thirty minute presentation by representatives of the bid team followed by sixty minutes of questions.

The adjudicators will then consider all bids for three weeks and it is anticipated that the announcement of the successful bidder will be known by 4th of December.

Dublin, Limerick and the South East are also bidding for the 2020 title.

If Galway is successful, it will then have a further nine months to lodge the second bid book which would become the basis of the contract between the successful bidder and the EU.
