New-look store to offer new craft delicatessen, bakery, Happy Pear section & new seating area to enjoy a cuppa and a chat with friends.

Hughes’ Claregalway has been at the heart of the community since 1929

10th June 2022 – SuperValu, Ireland’s leading food retailer, will launch its new look, state-of-the-art store in Claregalway on Friday, June 10th, following a significant investment of €1.2 million.

Hughes’ Claregalway will employ more than 80 people and is set to offer an extended range of top-quality produce across a new premium delicatessen, along with a new cheesemonger counter, new look deli, meat counter and Off Licence. The store will also have an enhanced fresh food offering with a new focus on convenience foods, quality meat, organic produce, plant based options including a new Happy Pear section and a Taste of Local area to continue to support local suppliers.

The Hughes family have been a part of the local community for over 90 years. In 1929, Mary (Egan) Hughes took over Claregalway Post Office, which later expanded into a local shop which grew steadily with the community adding homeware, hardware and bicycles in the 1980s. In the 2000s, Eva and Mary Hughes become the fourth generation to join the business alongside Martin and Jimmy and together they hope this latest investment will ensure that Hughes’ SuperValu will be around for many more years to come.

The Hughes’ team have gone to extensive lengths to be as environmentally conscious as possible with an investment of €300,000 in the new store’s innovative design. 519 LED model lighting fixtures have been installed, as well as sensor lights in the office areas and 10 refrigeration units with new lower carbon emissions. All large fridges are now closed to save energy. The new measures will lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption across the premise.

In addition to the goods already available, the new store will place a strong emphasis on fresh produce from local suppliers with 75 per cent of goods being sourced in Ireland. Shoppers can look forward to seeing a more extensive SuperValu Signature Tastes Range, Prepared for you and Deli Kitchen convenience foods and a new Premium Italian Range. As always, delivering quality and value to their customers across all ranges is the top priority for Hughes’ SuperValu.

Commenting on the launch of the new store, owner, Eva Hughes, said: “My great-grandmother opened this store 93 years ago and we are so proud to be able to build on her legacy.
