The only surviving Carraig an Aifrinn (Mass Rock) in Claregalway Parish is situated in a small field owned by Johnny Casserly, known locally for generations as Páircín na hAltóra, in the townland of Cahergowan. The field derives its name from the fact that, after the enactment of the penal laws in 1695, the Mass Rock was a source of spiritual refuge for local Catholics. Mass Rocks, which came in a variety of shapes and sizes, were dotted around the countryside and many are still to be seen. This is one of the smaller examples.
