The patron of the proposed new community college in Claregalway is expected to be announced by the Government soon, and it is hoped that the school will be open by September 2013.

The campaign for building a community college in Claregalway has been gathering momentum for several years, and it is expected that the school will eventually cater for 850 to 1,000 students in an area, which has seen rapid population growth.

“It is understood that the Co Galway Vocational Education Committee (VEC) is the only applicant for patronage of the new school.”

A source at the VEC said that if the VEC becomes the patron, no time would be lost in moving ahead with the project.

Expenditure of €26 million has been announced for two new secondary schools, the school in Claregalway and another to replace the current vocational school in Athenry.

Negotiations to purchase sites for the two new schools are currently taking place and it is hoped that the Government may announce the patron of the Claregalway College before the Dáil breaks for the summer recess on Friday.
