IT SLIGO was the place to be this week as Coláiste Bhaile Chláir first year girls soccer team were crowned Connacht Futsal Champions for 2016.
The five talented schools that progressed through to their County events to the prestigious Connacht Finals, the impressive Davitt College, Castlebar (Mayo), St. Clare’s Comprehensive School, Manorhamilton (Leitrim), Coláiste Bhaile Chláir (Galway), Mercy Convent (Roscommon) and the host County’s starlets St. Attracta’s Community School (Sligo) in an epic encounter.
Claregalway edged their opening game of the competition with a 2-0 victory over prior champions Davitt College. In the second round Claregalway had a tense encounter against St Attracta’s Sligo ending O-O this was ensured by Alanah Griffins acrobatic goalkeeping. In the remaining rounds Claregalway overcame Leitrim 2-0 and Roscommon 2-1 to ensure the place in the final
The final itself was another stern test for both teams as their previous encounter ended scoreless. However, Claregalway found some form in the final as Kate Slevin rocketed the ball into the Sligo net to scenes of jubilation and they eventually held out for a much deserved 1-0 victory, to be crowned the first Galway winners of the Connacht Futsol Championship.
Coláiste Bhaile Chláir will now progress to the National Finals which will take place in Waterford IT Sports Arena on December 8.
