28 Galway roads to be improved with €942,000 Local Improvement Scheme funding
Seán Kyne, Minister for Community Development, Natural Resources and Digital Development and Fine Gael TD for Galway West and Mayo South, has confirmed today (Monday) that 28 roads across Galway will be improved through the 2018 Local Improvement Scheme.
Funding of €942,000 has been allocated to Galway by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the 28 roads to be improved have been selected by Galway County Council.
Commented Minister Kyne: “The Local Improvement Scheme is a very important funding scheme for communities, particularly in rural area and I am delighted to confirm that 28 roads across Galway will benefit from the allocation of €942,000 to Galway County Council by my Department. The roads are located across all five of Galway’s municipal districts – Connemara, Athenry-Oranmore, Tuam, Loughrea and Ballinasloe.
“The Local Improvement Scheme provides investment in roads that are not in public ownership but are used by the public to access homes, farms, businesses or amenities such as lakes, rivers, and walking and hiking trails.
“My colleague, Minister Michael Ring has worked to maximise the amount of funding available for the Scheme on a national basis with Galway receiving the second highest allocation in the country.
“We have worked to launch the Scheme and allocate funding as early in the year as possible which has enabled local authorities to incorporate the Local Improvement Scheme projects into their own road improvement programmes. This approach ensures that the LIS funding goes further as local authorities can schedule improvement works when equipment, materials and workers are already in communities working on council road projects.
“My Department is providing up to 90% of the funding to local authorities for the improvements with local residents providing the remainder and the improvement works will be carried out over the summer and autumn months.”
