An Irish charity is challenging adventure seekers to join it on a sporting trip with a difference to one of Africa’s most magical destinations.
Well known Operation Transformation contestant Ronan Scully is looking for volunteers to join Self Help Africa at this year’s 14th annual Great Ethiopian Run through the heart of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in late November.
Ronan has already signed up more than a dozen Irish competitors to join him in the trip, which will also include a field visit to see some of the rural development projects that Self Help Africa has been implementing in the Horn of Africa for the past 30 years.
A number of places are left on the week-long expedition, for which competitors must raise at least €3,000 in sponsorship support. This sum covers all of the costs of travel, accommodation and entry fee to the 10km Great Ethiopian Run, and will also contribute valuable funds to support the development projects that the Irish-based charity is implementing in the country.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to travel to a part of the world that they mightn’t otherwise ever get to see, and also do some good for the people of the country at the same time,’ says Ronan, who confides that Ethiopia holds a very special place in his own heart.
“I worked there for a number of years in the past, and in more recent times my wife and I have adopted two little girls who are the joy of my life, from Ethiopia,” he says. “It’s a very special place indeed, and I could not speak highly enough about a trip like this one,” he adds.
Self Help Africa is an Irish based agricultural development charity that was founded in the immediate aftermath of the terrible Ethiopian Famine in the mid-1980s. “Our objective is to improve the lives of rural poor people so that they can grow more, and earn more from their land,” the charity campaigner added.
