The Cortoon Lavally Drama Group presents Habeas Corpus by Alan Bennett and Directed by Fred Williams. The Show will be performed SMA House in Claregalway on Saturday 3rd February 2012 at 8:30pm.

In the words of the group

We did not know when we started the play how relevant it would be to the troubles and woes that Irish society faces today, be it economy, health, church, family or politics, widening gaps between the haves and have-nots. This play takes these issues and, to quote a line from the play, “gives them a good kick up the arse”.

Lavally

Habeas Corpus takes a lot of today’s holy cows and makes mince-meat of them… the permissive society, the medical profession, breast enlargement, social climbing, class distinction, religious hypocrisy, self-importance, romantic fiction, machismo and hypochondria… just to name a few. But in case you think this all sounds like serious stuff for a night’s light entertainment, there’s also the matter of several men losing their trousers, while another one gets to do a bit of massaging of several female bosoms. All this and singing and dancing, too… well, if you call it that… adds up to a lot of laughs and, perhaps, a few home truths for you to muse upon, not least in the very last line of the play!

Now a little bit about us—our group is about 25 which includes Fred Williams, our director (actor, writer, teacher, adjudicator of 60 years in the business) who puts on drama in local communities and also supports local events, eg. mock wedding (for Cancer Care), old folks party, school pitch fund, ladies football, these are a few we have supported. This is our third production, the first being Tom, Dick and Harry which we took to several venues around the county in 2010. Next it was again a Ray Cooney production It Runs In The Family which took in several more new venues including Mayo, finally finishing up overseas in The Aran Islands. This year, yet again we are on our travels already having performed in Tuam, Glenamaddy, Headford and now Nuns Island on Feb 17–18th, SMA House, Claregalway on Mar 2–3rd, Dunmore Mar 9–10th, finishing in Listowel Co Kerry Mar 30–31st—the home town of two of the most influential Irish playwrights of the twentieth century, if John B Keane were alive today there would a special glint in his eye as he watched Habeas Corpus.
