A Galway student could be walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards next month after the animatedfilm he ‘stars’ in was nominated for an Oscar.
Fourteen year old Evan McGuire from Liscannanaun, Claregalway, stars in the animated movie The Secret of Kells as the voice of Brendan, alongside Irish greats Mick Lally and Brendan Gleeson.

And the second year student in St. Joseph’s The Bish says he would love to walk the red carpet in front of Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, but thinks his chances are slim, as tickets are like gold dust.

Tickets are hard to come by, but I would love to go. It is a once in a life time experience,

Evan attends Trading Faces drama school in Galway, where the seeds of his success were sown.

I started drama with Clare Power in Trading Faces at the age of five. She has been a huge influence for me and has encouraged me to go to the auditions. I went to this audition and they liked my voice and next thing I knew I got the part.

It was great to work with Brendan Gleeson and Mick Lally. I had a few scenes with them and they showed me how to get into character. Brendan has a great voice and was a huge help to me, he said.

His school-mates were unaware of his taking part in The Secret of Kells, only realising how big it was following the Oscar nominations.

Nobody really knew about it until the Oscars were announced.  Now they all think it is great and have been saying well done.”

How many 14-year olds can say they have been nominated for an Oscar? I sat up watching the nominations coming through on the Internet and couldn’t believe when they called out our movie, he said.
