A NEW Day Care Centre and sheltered housing development for the elderly has got the go-ahead in Claregalway.

The development will include 14 single storey housing units as well as a single storey day care centre which will replace the one already in the village.

Galway Co Council has granted planning permission for the project which will be located in Cregboy, a site which is accessed off the N18 via an existing housing estate.

Claregalway and District Day Care Centre has been actively searching for sites in the area for a number of years.  The lack of available sites, high costs and a suitable location close to the village has proven difficult.

However, the new site has been generously donated by the family who own it and this will be  a big help in bringing the project to fruition.

The current Day Care Centre is up and running for a number of years and has proven to be a big success.

The new development will provide 14 homes that are semi-detached and will offer semi-independent living.

It’s understood that while funding is in place to build the residential units, a major campaign wil be needed to raise the €570,000 to build the Day Care Centre

The development which will adjoin a residential estate and a creche is aimed at promoting and maintaining a balanced community.  The new two-bedroom homes are within walking distance of the village, shops, services and church.

The new centre will provide more space and facilities for elderly people of the area and will offer a range of social and educational activities as well as hot meals and health services.
