Minister Charlie Flanagan was joined by the Acting Garda Commissioner Dónall Ó’Cualáin to open the new Garda Headquarters in Renmore, Galway on the 20/7/18.
Garda authorities say the new 11,000 square metre development will cater for a full range of operational requirements at district, divisional and regional level.
It includes secure detention areas, incident management facilities, a unit to support victims of crime, public offices, garages and property storage facilities. It will also house training facilities including a firing range for specialist units.
The new Western Region Garda Headquarters in Galway was designed by the Office of Public Works {OPW) Architectural Services team, which is led by State Architect, Mr. Ciaran O’Connor. It is one of three major Garda projects recently completed, which includes new Divisional Headquarters in Wexford and Kevin St, Dublin, and forms part of the Government’s investment in Garda infrastructure and facilities.
The new Western Region Garda Headquarters will be a vital part of Galway City and west of Ireland infrastructure. It provides An Garda Síochána with a state of the art police facility. The building, clad in limestone and granite, has a contemporary civic quality, which acknowledges its pivotal corner site on a major entry point into Galway City.
The new Garda Headquarters consists of different building blocks that interconnect to form a secure courtyard at the centre of the scheme. It is designed to address the scale of the neighbouring buildings to both the north and south of the site and it provides buildings with a combined area of approximately 11,000 sq.m on a 1.02 hectare site. It is universally accessible with parking for members of the public and staff also accommodated within the site.
The development consists of 2-5 storey buildings, housing 21st century facilities to meet the present and future requirements of both An Garda Síochána and members of the public. A public reception, general office, conference and training facilities are provided, along with victim support accommodation. Prisoner processing and custody areas are contained in the building’s central wing and ancillary functions such as vehicle testing, a dog unit, evidence storage and management are provided to the rear. An indoor firing range is also provided. This is a much needed facility for An Garda Síochána and is the first purpose built indoor firing range in the Republic of Ireland.
The scheme is designed by OPW to incorporate sustainable green design principles. It will achieve an ‘A’ energy rating and has green roofs and solar panels for water heating.
The contract was awarded to local contractor, JJ Rhatigan & Co. on 2nd October 2015. Works commenced on site soon after, and reached substantial completion on 9th July 2018.
