Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta
Seniors lost by 2 points to Barna in the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta match played in Barna on Easter Monday. An Atlantic gale and rain-laden skies spoiled the game and the margin at the end would have been wider but for Brian O’Donughue’s fine reflex save in the closing minutes to divert the ball for a “45”. Playing with the elements in the first half, Claregalway led at the break by 0-6 to 0-4 and although battling gamely for the second half, were unable to add to their tally.Team: B. O’Donoghue, B. Loughlin, P. Stephens, J. Kearney, S. Cunniffe, J. Nallen, M. Evans, R. O’Flynn, A. Monaghan, P. Divilly, D. Heavey, J.P.O’Connell, E. Feeney, D. Hansberry, M. Kelly.
Junior
Juniors had a well merited 3 point win over St. Brendans of Ballygar in the Dunleavy Engineering North Junior A League Group 2 game played at the Leisure Centre on Saturday last. There was never more than a point or two between the sides for most of this entertaining game and the half- time score 5 points to 4 in the visitors favour. Although St. Brendans were sharper on the ball and assisted by the wind in the opening quarter, Claregalway improved as the game progressed and eventually pulled away in the last 10 minutes with 2 excellantly taken points from Paddy Walsh and the clincher from Anthony Monaghan who had played well all through. In the backs Keith McDermott in particular, Michael Evans and Gerry Madden were most prominent, Ronan O’Flynn and Eoin Feeney gave us an edge at mid field while up front, all six forwards were in sparkling form.

U16 Boys League
Claregalway U16 boys got their league campaign off to a winning start last Tuesday night in horrendous weather conditions in Furbo. Torrential rain and artic wind made it very difficult conditions for the players to play football on the night. Claregalway won the toss and played with the gale in the first half. Claregalway made a good start to the game and Harry Connelly scored the first point of the game after 3 minutes. Bearna exerted a lot of pressure to try & get on the scoreboard but some excellent defending from the Claregalway defence kept them scoreless. Consistent pressure from Claregalway saw further points from Michael Coyle & Brian O Connell to lead the game 0-3 to 0-0 after 15 minutes. A long free from Harry Connelly caused a mix up in the Bearna defence & the ball ended up in the net for a goal for Claregalway. Claregalway pushed on and scored the final point of the half to lead 1-4 to 0-0 at half time. Everybody ran for the dressing rooms for some shelter at half time!!
The second half conditions were similar to the first and scores were at a premium. Heroic defending from Dan McArdle at full back kept Bearna at bay until the 5th minute when a speculative shot ended up in the Claregalway net for a goal for Bearna. Claregalway played gallantly in the 2nd half despite the very difficult conditions & were unlucky not to add to their tally on a number of occasions. Bearna added 3 more points during a tense 2nd half to leave 1 point separating the sides with five minutes remaining. Excellent defending from Claregalway prevented Bearna from getting the equalizing point & the game finished with a one point win to Claregalway. This was a very difficult night for football & the players should be commended for playing well despite the conditions. Final Score; Claregalway 1 – 4; Bearna 1 – 3.
