The white flag was raised and they were off. The first of the twelve races took off to a flying start. A great crowd turned up in the Summerfield Bar on Friday, 6th March, to support the Claregalway Agricultural Show Race Night. Malachy Noone gave a fantastic commentary on all the races and his witty remarks brought screams of laughter from the race goers. Mr. Liam Belton operated the projector with his usual efficiency, and everything ran smoothly for the entire evening.
The betting was very exciting throughout the evening, and while some people made a little profit, others were not so lucky. The Auction Race was the highlight of the evening, with one of the horses fetching well over £100. Ms. Surney Dempsey, our Show Queen, looking elegant as always, was on hand to present the prizes.
First past the winning post in the Auction Race was Alan Horan’s horse. The prize for this race was a portable Television, which was part sponsored by O’Connor’s Incredible Planet. One of Tom McKenna’s horses came in second and his prize was a beautiful lamp, sponsored by Cré Irish Porcelain. The favourite for the Auction Race, gracefully named, after much deliberation Who Flung Dung is still not accounted for!
Claregalway Agricultural Show Committee wish to express our sincere thanks to all our race sponsors, all who purchased horses, all who donated spot prizes, all who purchased horses in the auction race and all who bet on the night. Thanks to Surney Dempsey, Malachy Noone, Liam Belton and Julie and tom McKenna for their assistance.
We hope you all had a pleasant, enjoyable evening and renewed thanks for your support.
