For over ten years from 1972, Lackagh Macra na Feirme was among the best Macra branches in the country, capturing numerous events and competitions, and were so innovative in their ideas that many of the members went on to be successful in careers and within their community.
In previous decades there was also a Macra branch in the area and in the 1990s Macra also played a significant role in the parish albeit for too short a period. An invitation is being issued to all who have been members of Lackagh Macra na Feirme at any time to come together to mark the year of the Gathering.
The Macra Gathering event will take place in The Arches Hotel, Claregalway on Friday November 22nd, a date that is also the 50th anniversary of the death of JFK. During that successful period of Macra in Lackagh, many members of the old Coolarne Youth Club also participated and this is an opportunity for a reunion of Coolarne Youth Club members to also join with the Macra gang on the night in a parish get-together that will be long remembered.
A special request is being made to notify persons who were members of either Lackagh Macra at any time or Coolarne Youth Club of this event. Anyone with photos and/or paper cuttings from that era is asked to forward a copy to Frank Kearney, so that a PowerPoint presentation of photos can be put together for the night.
