Relocation essential option for Claregalway-Carnmore flooding families – Healy Eames

Feb. 20th, 2011,

Lead Galway West Fine Gael Dail candidate Sen. Fidelma Healy Eames has confirmed today that FG in Govt will review the best option for families in the Caherlea-Lisheenavalla and CARNMORE areas, including relocation.

Up to fifteen families live under constant threat of being flooded in this area. Since the major flood event of Nov 09, they have been threatened a further four times. Some of these families now live without home insurance. They are sitting ducks to be flooded again. They are under constant threat.

Fine Gael TD and spokesperson on environment Phil Hogan TD and myself met with a representative of the families recently, who shared the majority families’ desire for relocation.

I was delighted to hear Deputy Hogan confirm that on achieving Govt he will personally visit the area with myself to assess the situation and decide the best option for the families. If relocation is the most appropriate course of action this will be pursued.

Further to an independently commissioned report and the on-going reoccurence of flooding, it is widely felt now that the proposed flood works will no longer solve the problem. Common sense must prevail. There is no point throwing more than €4m down the drain in flood works that may not solve the problem, said Senator Fidelma Healy Eames.
