U16s

After a slow start to the Division 1 Co. League, it is now all to play for. Claregalway qualified for the semi finals with a win over Ml. Breathnach by 2–8 to 0–11. The other qualifiers are St.Michaels, Oranmore and Salthill. We were slow into our stride against Ml.Breathnach who played a direct brand of football and scored six good points from outfield early on. Two goals by Paul Francis and David Walsh turned the game in our favour to give us a lead of 2–2 to 0–7 at half time. The second half was a close affair but a great display by David Raftery, well supported by Anthony Watson and Dara O Malley, gave us an advantage around midfield and as a result, set up the match-winning points.

Scorers: Paul Francis 1–2, David Walsh 1–1, Anthony Watson 0–2, Colin Deeny 0–1, Aidan Kearney 0–1, David Raftery 0–1.

The Joe Kyne Inter-Schools 9-a-side Football Blitz for juveniles up to 4th Class was played at the Leisure Centre on Wednesday June 10th. Claregalway, Carnmore, Cregmore, Bawnmore, Lackagh and Coolarne schools participated. There were four pitches in action to cater for 8 teams, divided into two groups of 4. So, each team had 3 games with the top team in each group playing off in the final.

Free Draw for Prizes for participants in the 1997/98 Co. Development Draw was held after the School Blitz competition.

Bus transport for the big Mayo v Galway game in Castlebar was organised for U12, U14 and U16 players and a good win for Galway crowned the day out.

U14s lost narrowly to Ml.Breathnach by 2–4 to 1–4 on Friday May 29th. Paul Loughlin’s display in the backs deserves mention. Scorers: Barry Cullinane 1–2, Alan Greaney and Phillip Raftery 1 point each.

U12s, U10s & U8s: Games and coaching for these age groups continue on Sunday mornings 11am–12.30pm. Newcomers to the area are invited to bring along their young stars and join in.
